The body gets used …
The body gets used to doing things repetitively, so you may be able to increase speed while playing only with your thumb. Also, there are thumb-picks, metal or plastic picks that look like rings that you wear them on the tip of your thumb. If you find your thumb getting sore the faster you play, those things might be helpful to you.

Guys please dont listen to this chump. Dont just do whatever is most comfortable to you for picking. Thats advice from a teacher. His way is weak and the pick will fall easily out of his hand especially as speed increases. There are proper ways to do things on guitar and its beneficial to learn these things early thats something i missed out on and regret.

When you buy your …
When you buy your 1st guitar, remember more expensive doesn’t mean you’ll like the sound better. My $225 Dean Z-X guitar sounds awesome and looks cool as hell. I have a HardWire CM-2 hooked into a DigiTech MultiChorus pedal, and the stereo output going to a home stereo, and a 1 SPOT to power the pedals so I don’t go through batteries every 10 minutes. Not totally cheap, but the $300 full electric/acoustic package someone else got was crap. If you’re not sure, buy used from a private person.
